Virtual Private Network Performancing

By Vahe Mushegyan, Enterprise Administrator, Net-Sectors Elite I.T. Group, www.NetSectors.com

Server log maintenance and updates are essential to networks. Implementation of the right technologies and security is a must! I have to admit that there is no better feeling than having a Data-Center with over 200 servers in it working like clockworks. All this because I took the time to maintain those servers and make sure all the updates are done, all the issues in the logs are resolved and all the software and hardware is configured properly without any shortcuts and rushing.

There is a fine line between having servers working and having servers working properly. In Virtual Private Networking, especially in corporate environments where everything is accounted for and minutes are counted, there is no room for error. We have to plan things out and carry our projects around the clock seamlessly. A good I.T. differs from great I.T. by being more seamless in the background. If the company is aware of the I.T. then we're not doing our job right.

This is when the "Servers Working Properly" comes in play. Everything adds up at the end... so one must be very diligent at handling the workload on routine basis. One of the most essential things is having the servers functioning without errors. We can check the progress of the server by looking in the even logs. To open the event logs:

1. Right click on "My Computer"
2. Choose "Manage"
3. Extend "Even Viewer" and go through the logs category by category.
4. You should see the following categories:
a. Application
b. Internet Explorer
c. Microsoft Office Diagnostics
d. Microsoft Office Sessions
e. Security
f. System
5. Once gone through all these make a note of all the errors in the logs.
6. Make sure you write all of them down with the "Event ID".
7. Save the logs in a remote location for future reference.
8. Clean out the logs and try resolving them completely by doing research.
9. Once the issues have been resolved, go through these steps again.
10. Make a note of all the errors which keep coming back, and resolve them as well.

This is the core of the system. Sixty percent of the problems can be resolved and found in this chamber. However we will discuss the other branches of VPN Performance improvements in our "Professional Networking Forums".
